Learning What I Thrive In

By Dan Kaplan • August 26, 2020

I reflect on my experience as CTO of FiveToNine, sharing insights about my professional journey and strengths.

I transitioned to tech from economics and communications background. I entered tech through a coding bootcamp after brief sales experience. I approach technology from a "What benefit can it provide" perspective.

Professional Insights

1. Communication Skills

  • Strong sensing and observational skills from world travels
  • Enjoy "translating tech to non technical people"
  • Help others understand "the power tech is able to unleash"

2. Technical Approach

  • Enjoy working on different parts of a codebase
  • Allow team to choose their work, enabling me to be a "utility player"
  • Focus on understanding interconnected systems

3. Management Experience

  • Initially scared of management responsibilities
  • Discovered I love team development
  • Appreciate increased social interaction compared to traditional engineering roles

Concluding Reflection

I have loved this role so far and am anxious to keep growing and thriving.
